Candlestick Press is a small, independent press publishing beautiful āInstead of a cardā poetry pamphlets. Based in Nottingham in the UK, weāve been making our mini-anthologies since 2008 and have now sold over 915,000 titles ā which means that weāve shared over nine million poems with our readers all over the world.
Who hasnāt looked up at the sky and seen a whale or a poodle or a sports car? Thereās something about clouds that excites the imagination. Their shape-shifting nature means they never fail to entertain and intrigue us.
Here in our little archipelago we certainly get our fair share. Whether itās the dumpy, fair-weather cumulus of a hot day in high summer or the spirit-dampening stratus of a wet November weekend, itās hard to imagine our skies without them.
These poems explore the many different ways in which we experience clouds ā whether simply as weather or as a more abstract representation of a state of mind or a mood. AsĀ Billy CollinsĀ says, quoting perhaps our greatest painter of clouds John Constable:
āThe emotion is to be found in the cloudsā¦ā
from āStudent of Cloudsā by Billy Collins
Itās impossible to pin down a cloud and this rich and varied selection reflects that beguiling elusiveness.
Our pamphlets are supplied with an envelope for posting, a bookmark for a special message and an āInstead of a cardā sticker to seal the back of the envelope for a lovely finishing touch.
